Thanks to everyone for the comments. I was a little surprised that my wrinkly dough photo elicited so much concern, because it didn't phase me: interestingly enough, the dough didn't feel dried out at all.

Baking Soda, I usually use plastic wrap over my dough while it rises, but the shower cap idea is a great one!

Lina, bread--especially homemade--is one of my husband's favorite foods, hands down, so the work that goes into making it is definitely appreciated around here. Any home cooking, for me, is really a way to nurture your loved ones with the work of your hands, but bread is such a fundamental food and yet involves so much time and effort that it really does epitomize that idea. It's the reason I don't bat an eye at spending hours cooking anything my family and friends might appreciate.

I really like your idea of bread as a Valentine thing... You can make any amount of complicated food or desserts, bread still is a basic thing of care and love. Great work, and gorgeous looking bread!

I was anxious following your story through text and pics...phew..happy it came out allright at the end. (Your wrinkling deflation was caused by a skin forming on the dough I think. Usually that's caused by drying out, maybe your dough wasn't covered enough? Try a plastic showercap next time, really, works miracles!)
