Great write-up. With the heat and everything, it did take a Daring Baker to complete this complicated recipe. You get extra points for following the recipe to a T and your cake looks really professional, too. Sorry it took me so long to comment.

Inne, thanks! I thought some of the cakes, mine included, really kind of looked like a map of the lunar surface or something under the mirror. It’s a neat effect.

Julie, your cake looks lovely. I too used past their best strawberries – not good enough for eating like that but still perfectly ok for using in a cake/cream/mirror. I like the way you got all the different colour tones in your mirror.

Aw shucks, guys, thanks so much! Thanks to the recipe, it’s certainly the most professional looking cake I’ve ever made. Peabody picked a good one!

Anita, the weather had cooled down to the lower 90′s by the time I was actually able to make the cake. Fortunately, Oregon can’t sustain triple-digits for long.

Heather, but you’re from Ohio, land of humidity. We have the mythical dry summer heat here, most of the time, which helps.

Lisa, Freyja is in fact adorable (see http://jcsparks.com/category/freyja/ for the evidence). I haven’t learned my lesson yet, though, because I went right back to the market with her a week or two later and came away carrying fragile apricots and boysenberries. Ah well.

Good gravy!! 104-degree heat – I think I’d be crying out “I’m melting, I’m melting!” And the next frame would show a puddle of water on the floor where I once stood.
